美國Brunswick Biomedical

Since 1944, Brunswick Biomedical Technologies has enjoyed a proud heritage of researching and designing innovative medical devices.

Initially, known as Brunswick Manufacturing Co., Inc., the company’s engineers invented the first “hands-free” automated CPR system working with Dr. Archer Gordon, whom many consider the “father of CPR.” Brunswick not only created the acronym “CPR,” the company was awarded the CPR trademark and patent (#881336) for its life-saving machine: The first automatic Heart Lung Resuscitator (HLR).

Working with Boston’s preeminent medical community, Brunswick was at the forefront, designing some of the first prosthetic pulmonary devices; machinery for performing open heart surgery; and products for emergency cardiac care.
In addition to inventing the first automated CPR machine in 1964, the Brunswick team of engineers, doctors and scientists developed and manufactured many other “first to market” innovations. Doing medical R&D has always been at the heart of Brunswick. We’re proud to share our list of accomplishments in the medical field.

Here is a chronological list of Brunswick “firsts”:
1960:
? Created the first prosthetic piece to be placed the in the bloodstream

1961:
? Produced the first prosthetic heart valve (Hufnagel Valve) for placement in the descending aorta prior to open heart surgery

1963-64:
? Manufactured the first “Bubble Oxygen Machine” for performing open heart surgery
? Made the first combination Heart-Lung machine for resuscitation which became the first automatic CPR system; called the Heart Lung Resuscitator (HLR)
? Was the first to coin the term “CPR” as the acronym for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

1965:
? Produced the first Electro–phrenic respirator under the direction of Dr. Stanley Sarnoff

1969:
? Awarded the only registered trademark and patent for CPR and HLR

1965-1970:
? Designed the first Leaflet Valves which are individual cusps for aortic valve replacement in the normal position

In the 1970’s, Brunswick:
? Manufactured the first discoid valve for the replacement of the mitral valve
? Was the first to use polypropylene as a suitable material for implantation
? Developed and the first self-contained heat exchange unit for employing hypothermia during open heart surgery and brain surgery
? Engineered the first alternative to endotracheal intubation for establishing ventilation in emergency situations outside the hospital by the introduction of the Esophageal (obturator) Airway
? In 1976, Brunswick became one of the first companies to have their medical devices registered with the US Food and Drug Administration.

1980 - 2000:
During the 80’s and 90’s, Brunswick focused their energies in opening European and Asian markets. This resulted in becoming a world-wide leader in the distribution of emergency life-support products. During that period, in the late 1980’s, the company relocated to Wareham, Massachusetts to fill the demand for increased manufacturing capacity.

In 1997, James Nichols, current president and owner, purchased the company and changed the name to Brunswick Biomedical Technologies. A new chapter of Brunswick started, with the same dedication to producing the best emergency life-saving equipment available. We never forget someone’s life depends on it.
